i think blogger is screwed cause it doesnt allow me to change colour? what's wrong with its screwed format for so long? so anw sticking to this dull SEPIA colour i shall do up a review of all the words we've learnt ( or supposed to learn by now lol) HERE IT GOES WHEE..
ps: the definitions are in white so u have to think through what it means first then highlight it to check if you're right (:

1. forlorn- desolate; miserable feeling; appearance, lonely and sad

She sat with a bowed head and spoke in a forlorn voice./ The house looked old and forlorn.


2. ostentatious- pretentious or conspicuous show in an attempt to impress others; sth that is ostentatious is designed to look expsenive and to make people think that the owner must be very rich.

She carried her car keys in an ostentatious gold key ring.



3. Pedantic- ostentatious in one's learning; paying too much attention to unimportant details.

Some people can be very pedantic in punctuation.


4. succinct- concise (explanation)

Your essay must be succinct to impress the markers.


5. cursory- going over sth without noticing the details, hasty.

A cursory glance over the newspaper.


6. Juxtapose - to place together or side by side especially for comparison or contrast

Juxtaposing the two essays revealed the huge differences in the author's viewpoints.


7. Masochist - One who derives sexual gratification, from being physically or emotionally abused.


8. Tenacious - holding fast; characterized by keeping a firm hold (often fol. by of):

a tenacious grip on my arm; tenacious of old habits;
There are also several strategies and quitting techniques that may aid smokers to finally give up on this tenacious habit


9. Transient - not lasting, enduring, or permanent; transitory.

A transient relationship; transient guests at a hotel


10. Apocalypse - any universal or widespread destruction or disaster.

The apocalypse of nuclear war.



11. BENIGN- gentleness, graceful disposition

He shook his head in a benign amusement.


12. Vicarious- experiencing secondhand thorugh imaginind another's experience


13. Capricious- changing suddenly, willfully erratic (mood)

A capricious wind; She was as capricious as her mother had been.


14. Fastidious- hard to please, too critical; very careful about small details (negative connation)

She is someone who is fastidious about personal hygiene.


15. estranged- alienated, emotionally separated; no longer seeing or talking to a good friend/ relative/ family due to an argument.

We became estranged strangers after a heated argument.


16. TREPIDATION: tremour, trembling, perturbation, anxiety

With some trepidation, i opened the door.


17. Temerity: audacity, recklessness

After the teacher's lecture on paying attention, only John had the temerity to ask him once agian to repeat the assignment.


18. Meteoric: ephemeral, momentary

His career faded as meteorically as it grew.


19. Prognosticate- predict, foretell

Market analysis must prognosticate economic fluctuations accurately in order to adivse investors.


20. Renege- to go back on one's word

He has reneged on his promise yet again.


21. Adamant - utterly unyielding in attitude or opinion in spite of all appeals, urgings, etc.

He was adamant that he was doing the right thing despite persuasion from his friends.


22. Obdurate - stubbornly resistant to moral influence; very determined to not change your believes in an unreasonable manner

Peter was an obdurate sinner.; They argued, but he stayed brdurate.


23. Delinquency: failure in or neglect of duty or obligation

The growth in juvenile delinquency has been attributed to the rising no. of latchkey children and increasing numbers of broken homes.


24. Alienation: state of being withdrawn or isolated from the objective world, as through indifference or disaffection

The increasingly monotonous and repetitive nature of many industrial manufacturing processes has led to workers' feeling a sense of alienation.


25. Ethnocentrism: Sociology; the belief in the inherent superiority of one's own ethnic group or culture


26. unprecedented - never known or happened before

The core achievements of wesern civilisation resulted in an increase in freedom and wealth unprecedented in the history of the world.


27. intractable - not easily solved or dealt with

Seemingly intractable global conditions continue to cause widespread human misery.


28.pro bonopublico - used to describe work that someone,especially a lawyer,does without
getting paid for it

Some law firms will take on pro bono cases when possible.


29. fiasco - complete failure

The first lecture i ever gave was a complete fiasco.
The party was a fiasco.


30. perambulate - walk slowly

Perambulating people on to the margins of narrow pathment.


31. grim - horrible or unpleasant,bad quality

Long distance bus journey is a grim.
You should see her recent essays.They are pretty grim.


32. marvelled - feel astonished or feel great surprise or admiration for something,especially
someone's behaviour

I marvelled at my mum's ability to remain calm in a crisis.
They marvelled at the fantastic sight.


33. epitomises - to be a very typical example of something or exemplifies or symbolises

The fiasco epitomises the lack of regulation in the industry.


34. Assimilation: the process oF understanding and using new ideas / people assimilate into a country or group

It will take time to assimilate all these facts./ Refugees find it difficult to assimilate into the new community.


35. Adduce: give facts or reasons to prove that something is true.

As more evidence was adduced, the reaction was that the threat was remote and there was plenty time to take remedial action.


36. Paradigm- an example serving as a model; pattern
Paradigm-shift: an immportant change in which the usual way of thinking or doing something is replaced by another way of thinkinf or doing something.

We should change the paradigm and make it fashionable to drive energy-efficient cars instead of Sports Utility Vehicles.


37. Periphery: relatively minor, irrelevant, or superficial aspects of the subject in question; at the edge
( a person or thing that is on the periphery is not one of the main things involved.)

The government pushed environmental concerns from the periphery into mainstream thinking.


38. espouse: to support an idea or believe (especially a political one), adopt a cause, marry to

He espoused for the call of liberal reforms.


39. Ratify: to confirm by expressing consent, approval, or formal sanction ( signed treaty or agreement)

Singapore ratified the Kyoto Protocol some nine years after the international treaty to cap greenhouse gases nwas first framed.
